What we collect
Information you choose to send us. When you request a consultation, email or call us, we collect what you provide: usually your name, contact details, the names of other people or businesses involved (so we can check for conflicts of interest), and a general description of your matter. The form also asks, optionally, how you heard about us and who referred you, so that we understand how people find us and can thank those who refer them.
Please do not send confidential information until we have confirmed that we can act for you. Sending us information does not create a lawyer-client relationship.
Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting provider may process technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the site and protect it from misuse. If we use website analytics, we use a privacy-focused tool that does not use cookies or build profiles of individual visitors.
Cookies and similar technologies. This website does not use advertising or tracking cookies. The home page stores a small note in your browser for the length of your visit so that the opening animation plays only once. It contains no personal information.
How we use it
We use personal information to:
- respond to your inquiry and arrange a consultation;
- check for conflicts of interest before we discuss your matter;
- provide legal services if you retain us;
- keep the records that our professional obligations and the law require; and
- operate, secure and improve this website.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for unrelated purposes without your consent.
Our consultation form
Requests sent through our website form are delivered to us by email. They are not stored on the website. The service that relays the form processes your information only to deliver it to us.
When we share information
We share personal information only:
- with service providers who help us run the practice, such as our website host, email provider, practice management software, business-grade AI and document tools, and payment processor. They are required to protect it and use it only to provide their services, and our AI tools are contractually barred from using your information to train their models;
- where you have consented; or
- where the law or our professional obligations require or permit it.
Some of our service providers may store or process information outside Ontario or outside Canada, where it may be subject to the laws of those places.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described above, including the conflict-checking records and client files that our professional obligations require us to maintain. When it is no longer needed, we destroy or anonymize it securely.
How we protect it
We use reasonable physical, organizational and technical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including access controls and encrypted connections to this website.
Newsletter
If you subscribe to our newsletter, The Legal Ripple, we will send it only with your express consent, identify ourselves in every message, and include a way to unsubscribe at any time. We keep a record of your consent.
Your choices and rights
You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or withdraw your consent to its use, subject to legal and professional restrictions. Contact us using the details above. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
